President’s message By: Susan E. Haack, The Motorists Insurance Group

About OAMIC…
Purpose:
- To bring together its members in a mutual concept
- To develop and maintain cooperation among its members, other insurance associations and organizations
- To take an active role in the education of its members and the insuring public for which the membership serves
- To work in all matters that are beneficial to the membership of this association
OAMIC members have likely seen this purpose statement on a regular basis, as it is included in each issue of the mutual VOICE. As I reflect on the approaching end of my term as president of our association, I ask myself: “Have we fulfilled this purpose?”
Do we bring together our members in a mutual concept? I believe we do, although we would certainly like to see even greater participation in the various events offered to the membership. The 2011 convention last February brought the first of NAMIC’s Farm Mutual Director Certification (FMDC) courses right into our backyard, creating a great opportunity for our member companies to engage and educate their board members more fully on our industry. Those offerings will continue in the future. The summer golf outing brings together member company employees, reinsurers, vendors and other industry partners for an enjoyable day of networking and camaraderie. And the weather even cooperated this year!
Do we develop and maintain cooperation among our members, other insurance associations and organizations? My answer to this would also be “Yes.” The OAMIC staff and board of directors work together all year to develop programs, involve members and partner with other organizations like OII and Bricker & Eckler to bring relevant and timely topics to you. Our membership rolls continue to grow, further evidence that others see value in associating with OAMIC members.
Do we take an active role in the education of our members and the insuring public? This is an emphatic “Yes!” and is taken very seriously by the OAMIC staff and directors. We hope you will agree that the continuing education and general industry topics offered at the fall seminar, convention, and other events are carefully selected and well-presented so as to make your attendance worthwhile. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for future topics that would be beneficial to our members. Through our website resources we offer consumers information about our industry and our “mutual” advantages.
Do we work in all matters that are beneficial to the membership of our association? Again, “Yes,” as I believe that through all our activities OAMIC strives to bring valuable information, services and resources to our members. Our affiliation with NAMIC provides advocacy support at both the state and national levels, and offers us the opportunity to speak directly to our elected officials in Washington through the Congressional Contact Program (CCP). The next CCP is scheduled for April 23-24, 2012 – join us!
All in all, I’m pleased with the continued commitment and outcomes achieved in fulfilling OAMIC’s purpose over the past year, and I hope our members are, too. Certainly this was not the first year your association achieved its purpose – we’ve been bringing our members together, educating and working to their benefit mutually and cooperatively for nearly 132 years!
See you at the convention, February 15-17, 2012. We are very excited that the 2012 convention will include a reception and dinner recognizing the Ohio State Highway Patrol ACE Award winners.
Fall seminar well attended
Nearly 100 attendees had the opportunity to “earn while you learn” at this year’s 10th annual OAMIC/Ohio Insurance Institute/Bricker & Eckler fall seminar held October 27 at the Villa Milano in Columbus. Taking Charge of the Future was the theme for the event and attendees had the opportunity to earn the following credits throughout the day:
- Ohio agent continuing education: 6 hours
- Ohio attorney continuing legal education: 4.75 hours
- NAMIC’s Farm Mutual Director Certification (FMDC): 1 credit (management module)
Susan E. Haack, OAMIC president, The Motorists Insurance Group; Faith M. Williams, Bricker & Eckler, and Daniel J. Kelso, Ohio Insurance Institute, welcomed attendees and set the tone for the seminar with brief opening remarks.
Succession planning was the first topic of discussion and Timothy F. Sullivan, NAMIC Insurance Company, emphasized the importance of having well-thought-out plans in order to assure a company’s success.
Robert H. Katz and Christopher N. Slagle, Bricker and Eckler, shared their views on issues that are, or could, impact insurers, agents and consumers. They offered comments on judicial and legislative issues and provided details on a variety of issues facing voters in the November 2011 Ohio elections.
During lunch, Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor (and director, Ohio Department of Insurance) shared the status of the Governor’s Common Sense Initiative (CSI). CSI was established to review the state’s regulatory system and eliminate excessive and/or duplicative rules that prevent the creation of jobs in Ohio.
The afternoon was off to a quick pace as Jimi Grande , NAMIC, presented a variety of issues under consideration by the federal government, including their potential impact on insurers and society.
The day concluded with a panel of industry experts expressing their views on the importance of managing relationships with rating agencies and regulators. David L. Kaufman, The Motorists Insurance Group; James J. Kennedy, The Ohio Mutual Insurance Group; and David E. Tschantz, Wayne Insurance Group; comprised the panel. Barry Koestler, II, Demotech, Inc., served as moderator for the panel. Upon conclusion of the panel, it was obvious attendees understood the importance of creating and managing relationships with rating agencies.

2012 OAMIC Convention to be held Feb. 15-17
Plans have been finalized for the 2012 OAMIC Convention on Feb. 15-17, 2012, at the DoubleTree Hotel Columbus/Worthington. The program is shaping up to provide a wealth of information for you, and the guaranteed hotel room rate will remain at $102.
OAMIC is again offering NAMIC’s Farm Mutual Director Certification (FMDC) program prior to the kick-off of the 2012 convention. Farm mutual directors have the opportunity to earn up to four credits both in the Operations & Insurance module and in the Management module of the FMDC by attending the pre-convention education courses on February 15, 2012. Directors can also earn Ohio Agent Continuing
Education credit if they hold an Ohio agent license.
Please mark your calendars and plan to attend! Registration information can be found at www.oamic.org/events/convention12.htm. The deadline for room reservations and convention registration is January 20. And, there are still opportunities available for sponsors and exhibitors. We hope to see you there.
2012 OAMIC Congressional Contact Program set for April 23-24
Plans are underway for the 2012 OAMIC Congressional Contact Program on April 23-24, 2012, at The Hotel George in Washington D.C. Our objective is to get widespread attendance from all OAMIC companies, with a minimum of one OAMIC representative from each Congressional District.
Everyone who has attended these visits will tell you that they are very important. Few legislators have knowledge of the role or problems of the mutual insurance industry in today’s business environment. However, constituent visits do make a difference. Please send at least one representative from your company. This visit is well worth its expense. For more information, please go to www.oamic.org/events/12congressional.htm.
Insurance match program benefits children & families

What’s the buzz about?! More and more insurance companies across the nation are signing up to participate in the Federal Office of Child Support Enforcement’s (OCSE) Insurance Match (IM) program to benefit children and families.
In partnership with state child support enforcement (CSE) agencies and the insurance industry, OCSE designed, developed and implemented this efficient, cost effective and centralized program to compare information about individuals owing past-due support with information maintained by insurers (or their agents) concerning insurance claims, settlements, awards and payments. This is a voluntary data match program for both state CSE agencies and the insurance industry.
The program gets results! Collections voluntarily reported by 24 of the 53 state CSE agencies participating in the IM program total over $5.7 million in child support dollars! One custodial parent in Alaska received over $30,000 as a result of a collection from an insurance settlement.
For more information on the Insurance Match program, see the Fact Sheet provided by OCSE.
If you would like to sign up to participate or would like additional information about the program, please contact Erica Holliman at (202) 401-5730 or erica.holliman@acf.hhs.gov.
